Project Statement:
Globalization is the connection the countries have together, cultural, economical, and even spiritual at times. For this project I thought I would do something that has been talked about for years, Body Modification. Body Modification, in this form of the world, is about Tattoos and Piercings.
Tattoos and Piercings throughout history, and to this day, have been classified as cultural coming of age ceremonies. But in this day and age it is more prevalent as a form of self-expression. In America alone, it is seen that most adults after the age of 18 have at least a tattoo or piercing that is not on the ear lobe.
If this is true, has the world socially accepted body modifications, to the point that all forms are appropriate? Personally I enjoy the individuality of Body Modifications, from simply nose piercings, to intricate arm tattoos known as sleeves.
As a potential medical student, I have often contemplated body modification and how acceptable it is in professional settings. I have been told from many that if I truly wanted a tattoo, and to remain in the medical profession I would need to be able to hide them.
Culturally accepted, yet shunned in the professional area, I want to use this project to showcase the types of tattoos and piercing around the world. If it is approved I would want to create a global image of cultural Body Modification, including but not limited to piercings and tattoos. If that idea seems to be too creative rather than research based my fall back plan would be to make a webpage showcasing the information I have learned about Bodily Modifications.
